About the Umbwe Route
The Umbwe route approaches Kilimanjaro from the south. The route is a short, steep and direct one, and considered to be very difficult. Due to the fast ascension, this route does not provide the necessary stages for altitude acclimatization. Although the traffic on this route is very low, the chances of success are also very low.
The route is offered at a minimum of six days, and seven days is preferred when attempting to climb using Umbwe. However, overall, the Umbwe route is not recommended for most climbers due to its challenging nature and low success rate.
This route is best suited for experienced hikers who have previously climbed at high altitudes and are confident in their ability to acclimatize quickly.
Umbwe Route Map

The Umbwe Route is the most direct path to the summit but also the steepest and most challenging. It joins the Machame Route at Barranco Camp on day 2.

Health Information
Most able-bodied persons aged 10 and older can hike Mt. Kilimanjaro; however, preparation, precaution and care must be made to ensure everyone's safety.
The Umbwe Route is particularly challenging and is not recommended for first-time climbers or those without high-altitude experience. Due to its steep ascent profile, acclimatization is more difficult on this route, which can increase the risk of altitude sickness.
We strongly recommend:
- Consulting with your doctor before attempting this climb
- Getting proper vaccinations and medications for Tanzania
- Training physically for at least 2-3 months before your trek
- Bringing appropriate clothing and gear for extreme weather conditions
- Purchasing comprehensive travel and medical insurance that covers high-altitude trekking and evacuation
Our guides are trained in recognizing and managing altitude sickness and will monitor your health throughout the trek. Your safety is our highest priority.
